Three Tips for Holidays
Tip #1: Stay present
Have you noticed how easy it is to get carried away with all the 'to-do' lists to accomplish and places to be during the holidays? It can almost feel like having two jobs: the 9-5 and socialite. The best way to help yourself and your family, is to stay grounded as you move about your days. The simplest way to do this is to stop, take a deep breath in for four counts, hold your breath for two counts and then let out your breath for another four counts. Do that three times in a row and you will immediately feel more relaxed. Another easy way to bring yourself back into the present moment is to literally touch a tree or feel your feet in your shoes and your shoes on the ground. Research shows that when our stress levels go down, the body, especially the brain, literally begins to rejuvenate.
Tips #2: Focus on gratitude
You’re probably thinking I have the wrong holiday. But gratitude is not just for Thanksgiving. Gratitude changes your brain activity and triggers more joy and better health. Countless studies have shown that people who focus on positive thoughts of gratitude, have stronger immune systems, fewer stress hormones and handle change more easily. In some ways, gratitude is like giving yourself a shot of home grown wheatgrass. In this holiday time, take time to notice all the things that you are grateful for in your life. A fun little game is to stop in your tracks and notice all the things you like and are grateful for within 10 feet of you. If subjects at the family dinner table or on an outing get a bit heavy or negative, invite your friends and family to share what they are grateful for and watch the mood shift.
Tip #3: Tap into the Newness
This is the end of a monumental year in which many of us have faced challenges. However, behind those challenges, there is a constant unchanging supportive light and energy available to us as we move into 2012. All we have to do is be open to receiving this beautiful energy. To stay connected to the light within yourself and others picture the brightness of the sun as if it’s sitting in your heart and allow the light to fill your heart and your whole body. Hold this image for a slow count of 10. We always have the power to choose what we focus on, so keep your thoughts focused on the unchanging truth which is we are hu- meaning light mann- meaning being; we are light beings.
Blessings of the season and a light-filled New Year.
